Let's help her our with space suggestions as well as recommending a storage furniture piece and drape solutions. To the right of the window, we have installed a long desk that runs the length of the wall. Lately I'm thinking that the ideal piece would be a long unit with some added height for shelving on the left that could run up the wall to the left of the window. The evil window that lends a lovely 'Jail cell' feel to the whole space - any ideas for a treatment/solution? I was thinking of a rod and then curtains that double the window in height to fake a more attractive architecture, but worry that it might look ridiculous when they're open. As far as the small(ish) windows you could do a number of things. Some say accentuate the imperfection by using fabric that covers only the windows while others want to hide the imperfection. Possibly something with a pattern to focus on-so you aren't focusing so much on the windows.
The bedroom at Monkey Cottage made us want to live in an attic. What did we do but go in search of more lovely attic bedrooms? There are lots of them out there, as many an attic has been converted into a spare room for guests, cozy kids' room, or even a lofty master bedroom. We like a headboard; we think it anchors the bed and, thus, finishes off the room. Jonathan posted some alternative headboard ideas during Bedroom Month. In honour of our Curees, who are working on their bedrooms this week, here are some more inspirational photos, we found while surfing flickr, that can help you think outside the confines of a traditional headboard.... Steldy uses a screen in place of a traditional headboard. Iampeas uses picket fencing as a headboard in her bedroom. You can live it up like the Hotel California in Santa Monica, where a surfboard headboard can have you living the surfer life in your dreams. Here a picture framed inspirational quote becomes a headboard with a positive message to face the day. Close out the world with this door headboard which is backlit at night.
'Being a renter with a modest income and even more modest space to work with means compromises will be made when putting together a decent home theater setup. We've been pretty satisfied with our current setup, which includes an Optoma HD70 720p DLP projector, a 92' Panoview manual pulldown screen, a Yamaha YSP-800 Soundbar, Apple TV and Oppo 971H upscaling DVD player. As noted recently in past posts, I made a decision to transition away from the Apple TV as our home media device, adopting the PS3 slim as the new centerpiece to our home theater setup. As is often the case, introducing an upgrade sets off a domino effect, igniting a desire to upgrade everything else in relation to the newest component. 'Upgrade to a 1080p projector: The 1080p category of projectors is the most competitive segment in home theater today, with a handful of very capable 1080p projectors available at a once unthinkable price point. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, we have room dimension limitations that make our upgrade options an abbreviated one. First there's pricing, so sub $1000 is definitely our range. Second, our 12' width room requires a projector that can fill up the 92' screen with a fairly short throw. Our goal: Vivitek H1080FD DLP projector $999. True 5.1 Home Theater System: here's where I'm sure people will want to chime in, as my choice may ruffle the feathers of those more serious about their home theater audio. We want to continue without having to run wires across our small studio apartment, yet upgrade to a better sound experience. So with that out of the way, we still think people living in small spaces can enjoy the home theater experience with a decent system that only has to service a small apartment studio space like our own, with the hopes of choosing a system that is both audibly enjoyable and visual invisible. Our requirements for a small space, decor-friendly and affordable 5.1 audio system was best fit by the specifications of the Sony HT-IS100 BRAVIA Theater Micro System. The 5.1 channel home theater system notably offers the upgrade option of wireless speakers and HDMI connectivity; the speakers themselves are atomic particles compared to even most mini home theater in a box systems, making them discrete additions to any room, only noticed when turning on the system. In the meantime, we'd love to hear from you how you'd upgrade with a similar budget and a small space.
David wrote us recently to ask: I have seen your tips for wall-sized calendars, but what recommendations do you have for creating a large close-to-wall-size art display wall? I hope to create something that is magnetic and which has whiteboard capabilities? We'd probably stay away from markers just in case your little one decides to stray from the white board. Yoyashop offers chalkboard paint that is also magnetic. That way any art work on paper can be put up on the wall as well. We're envisioning something like our Flickr Find: Courtney's Playroom where she dedicated an entire wall to chalkboard paint and it looks great. If you don't want to paint the wall at all, see our earlier post featuring some chalk board items that you can just hang onto the wall for a similar effect. Consider mixing in some bulletin boards or peg boards so items can be pinned up. Our final thought is to keep a camera handy and photograph the wall frequently as it will be forever-changing. This way you can preserve all of your child's works. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for David?
Above are two of the 4,600 pieces of high resolution artwork available for download right now, part of The Getty museum's free Open Content Program. Alongside the pair of Jan van Huysum floral still lifes, Titian, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and countless other famous artists' works are available to use for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.... Visitors to the Getty Search Gateway's Open Content Images can browse through the growing collection of 4,600 images, and further filter their search according to parameters such as art type, topics, by artist, and by location portrayed. Upon downloading, you'll only be asked whether you're downloading the image for personal or professional use, and whether the image is being used by a private individual, non-profit, or for-profit organization. I downloaded a digital copy of Pietro Paolini's painting, Achilles among the Daughters of Lycomedes, and found the transfer fast; the total file size was 22.7 MB jpeg at 4,885 x 2824 resolution once opened, a resolution fine enough to print out using a capable archival quality inkjet printer for printing on art stock or inkjet compatible canvas for framing. Tip: Take your chosen file(s) over to Kinko's and use one of their large format printers and you've got an instant wall-sized reproduction piece for about $47..
Pottery Barn just introduced a modular set of stainless steel items, one of which is a pseudo-backsplash. The stainless steel magnetic backsplash is 36'x18', costs $79 and can be used by itself or in a line to go across the top of a long counter.
We have loved yellow and white stripes ever since we saw the nursery ceiling in the home of J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons. The pattern and color remind us at once of circus tents and classic cafe canopies: fun plus style all rolled into one. The pairing seems to work best in wide stripes, and we particularly love it when it slopes up from wall to ceiling.
Harbenger Duo is a husband and wife design team based in Houston, Texas. Lucky for us, their stylish take on modern/traditional furniture is available through Etsy! 'The Kart chair shown in the first image is made from walnut veneered birch plywood and is $400 from Etsy. The Hammock coffee table - measuring 57.5' x 17' x 17.75' - coordinates beautifully with the chair and sells for $650. In addition to it's body of walnut veneered birch plywood, it features a felt pocket to hold magazines and remotes. You can see more of the Harbenger Duo collection on their website and blog.
Chrome fixtures are common in bathrooms, but they can be made very modern when paired with gray walls and a clean-lined tub. Click below for modern bathrooms in silver and gray, ranging from super-sleek to warmed up.... In the top photo from Wow Bathrooms, this Duscho-designed space latches on to the trend towards furnished bathrooms. The silver chair picks up on the shiny chrome finishes throughout the room. The glass dividers in this space by Boffi let lots of light into the bathroom, while the wall-mounted fixtures seem to float. This heather-gray Chilewich Roller Shade has just a hint of violet, and the signature Chilewich texture adds richness to the window treatments. The hanging light fixture in this Boffi bathroom softens the hard edges of the ultra-modern fixtures. This photo from the Jamie Hayon Collection for Spanish company Arquitect shows how Hayon's artistic interpretation of traditional fixtures can bring a bathroom to the next level. We like the use of the little stainless steel stool in this Blu Blue Shower from Wow Bathrooms. In this photo from Living Etc, a freestanding tub is chrome-plated. This Selvaggio Tile from Ann Sacks is paired with carved wooden pieces, a nice compliment to the modern pattern.
